What is Assignment Activity?
The Assignment activity in Moodle provides a platform for students to submit their work to instructors for evaluation. This submission can take various forms, such as typed text entered directly online or uploaded files in formats compatible with the teacher's device.
The grading process is flexible, allowing for simple percentage-based assessments, custom scales, or the use of intricate rubrics to evaluate the submitted work comprehensively.
Moreover, students have the option to submit assignments individually or collaboratively as part of a group, adding versatility to the assessment process.
Setting up an Assignment Acitivity.
To set up the Assignment activity in your course,
- First, turn on the editing mode. From the activity chooser, select 'Assignment.'
- Provide a name and a description detailing what students are required to submit. You can enhance clarity by uploading additional help or example documents in the designated area.
- Further customize the assignment by expanding other settings. This includes specifying availability times, choosing submission methods, and determining feedback mechanisms (utilizing features like inline comments for direct annotation on submitted work).
- For added control over submissions, consider exploring Submission settings. This allows you to implement measures such as requiring students to verify the authenticity of their work or preventing changes to submissions once uploaded. If group submissions are desired (assuming your course includes groups), delve into Group Submission settings.
- To employ a rubric for evaluation instead of a single-grade scale, adjust the Grading method to 'Rubric.' After saving the assignment, access or create the rubric through the Advanced grading link in the Assignment administration block on the side. This comprehensive setup process ensures a tailored and effective Assignment activity within your Moodle course.
Grading
Grades can be inputted in various sections within Moodle, and the choice of the optimal location depends on the specific context of what and where you are grading.
There are three methods available for grading an assignment in Moodle.
Grading from Assignment Page
- Navigate to the specific Assignment activity within your Moodle course.
- Click on the 'View grade all submissions' or 'Grade' link.
- 'View all submission' will lead you to the next page where you can filter or choose which student you want to grade first.
- Review and assess each student's submission, providing feedback and entering grades as necessary. Select whether to notify the student or not.
- Utilize any grading rubrics or scales configured during the assignment setup.
- Save changes to ensure that the grades and feedback are recorded.
Grading from the Grader Report
The Grader Report serves as the primary overview of the course gradebook, presenting all grades in a grid format.
- It can be accessible through the Course Administration section: Gradebook setup>Grader Report on the left of the course page.
- To input grades directly into the Grader Report, activate the Editing mode using the button located in the top-right corner. Once Editing is enabled, each grid cell will feature one or two entry boxes, depending on the grade-book configuration. The left box, delineated by a solid border, is for entering grades, while the second box with a dashed border is designated for feedback.
- Upon entering grades on this page, shaded cells in yellow indicate that the grade has been manually overridden in the gradebook. It's important to note that any alterations made from the Assignment Grading page will not be reflected in the gradebook in such cases.
Grading from the Single View Tab in the Grader Report
The Single View function integrates grades directly into the Grader Report, and any grades inputted via this page are categorized as "Overridden," indicating that modifications cannot be made from the Assignment or Activity-specific grading interface.
To access Single View:
- A pencil icon at the top of each column in the Grader Report, next to the activity name, provides access to the Single View page for that activity.
Entering Grades:
- Upon entering the page, activate the Override checkbox next to the grade you wish to modify. For bulk entry, selecting "All" at the top of the column allows simultaneous modification of all grades.
- After making changes, click on Save to update the grades accordingly.
