!!Remember to ensure your Gradebook aligns with your Outline!!

Course Gradebook Grade Categories == Course Outline Assessment Categories

View Detailed Instructions

The first place to look for grade items outside a category is right at the very bottom above the Course Total line. When a new graded item is added to the course homepage, if you do not select a specific grade category the item will automatically appear at the bottom of the gradebook.

As a result, the weight of this item is added to the gradebook total. So in the case in the image below, the gradebook is now calculating out of 101 instead of 100.

Move the item by selecting the up-down arrow to the left and then selecting the correct location to move the item.
1)
2)
Now the item is located underneath the correct category and the gradebook will calculate correctly:

**You may also find grade items located outside categories elsewhere in the gradebook so look for clear child-parent alignment between all grade items and grade categories. For more details see our grade items and categories instructions.

!! Gradebook overrides in the Category Total may not calculate correctly!!

The first step is to ensure that all grade categories have at least one grade item contained. In the case of a Final Exam, for example, even if written in-person, you should create a Grade Item that contains the Final Exam grade separate from the Category Total.

Incorrect: Entering the grades directly into the Grade Category

Correct: Entering the grades into a grade item separately which calculates into the total for the category.

You can quickly spot overrides three different ways:
  1. Look at the Grader Report for any grade shaded in beige. Confirm these shaded grades are not in a Category Total column.

  2. Look for the Override blue checkmark in the Single View of a Grade Item or User

  3. Look for the word "Override" in the User Report view of the gradebook.

Watch for the following Total Calculation parameters that may not be used appropriately depending on the purpose of the Grade Category:

  • Exclude empty grades
  • Keep the highest #
  • Drop the lowest #

Look for alternate grade calculation methods that need to be changed back to weighted mean of grades:

  • Simple weighted mean of grades
  • Mean of grades (with extra credit)
  • Natural

Please note: We do not recommended using alternate calculations to the weighted mean scale. This is the most clearly calculated for students.

If you are using other calculation methods, you must ensure that you are being consistent in the same calculation method for your whole gradebook.
